The untold secrets behind lord Krishna’s miraculous birth that changed the course of cosmic history in Indian mythology
“यदा यदा हि धर्मस्य ग्लानिर्भवति भारत।
अभ्युत्थानमधर्मस्य तदात्मानं सृजाम्यहम्॥”
“Yadā yadā hi dharmasya glānir bhavati bhārata |
Abhyutthānam adharmasya tadātmānaṃ sṛjāmy aham ||”
Whenever righteousness declines and unrighteousness rises, O Bharata, I manifest myself.” — Bhagavad Gita 4.7
From the sacred pages of Bhagavata Purana (Book 10, Chapter 1-3) and the Mahabharata‘s Harivamsa Parva and Vishnu Purana, we dive into this timeless story that has captivated millions for over 5,000 years…
The Shadow of Kamsa:
The magnificent city of Mathura gleamed like a jewel on the banks of the Yamuna River. This city was the heart of the Yadava kingdom, where prosperity flowed like honey and culture bloomed like lotus flowers in spring. But sometimes, even paradise can hide a serpent.
That serpent was Kamsa. The year was approximately 3228 BCE, and the ancient city of Mathura trembled under the iron fist of King Kamsa.
Kamsa was the cousin of Devaki, the beautiful, virtuous princess of the Bhoja clan, the mother of the deity Krishna, but their relationship was anything but familial. Born to King Ugrasena, Kamsa had started as a prince, but ambition had twisted his soul into something dark and unrecognisable. Upon the advice of his personal confidantes, Banasura and Narakasura, Kamsa decided to overthrow his father, and install himself as the ruler of Mathura.
But here’s where the story gets interesting – and terrifying.
Kamsa wasn’t just any ordinary tyrant. The ancient texts describe him as having demonic tendencies, someone whose very presence could make flowers wilt and children cry. He ruled through fear, his soldiers patrolling the streets like vultures, and his dungeons echoing with the cries of those who dared to oppose him.
But fate, as they say, has a sense of irony.
The Wedding That Changed Everything
Princess Devaki is getting married to Vasudeva, and everyone’s celebrating.

Devaki was not just beautiful; she was luminous. People said that when she smiled, it was as if the moon had decided to grace the earth with its presence. She was pure of heart – the kind of person who would feed birds before eating her own breakfast, who would weep over a wilted flower, and who saw divinity in every living being.
Vasudeva, her groom, was equally remarkable. A noble chieftain of the Yadava dynasty, he was known for his righteousness, his wisdom, and his unwavering devotion to dharma. When these two souls came together, it was as if the universe itself sighed in contentment.
Kamsa, playing the role of the generous cousin, had arranged their wedding with great pomp. He personally drove their chariot as they left for their new home, his chest swelling with pride at his own magnanimity. The people of Mathura smiled and blessed the couple, unaware that this moment of happiness was about to shatter like glass.
And then, it happened.
As the wheels of the chariot rolled through the streets of Mathura, a booming voice echoed from the heavens—the Akashvani (divine voice):
“Kamsa, you fool! The eighth child of this woman you are so proudly escorting will be the cause of your death!”

Time stopped.
The flowers in Devaki’s hair seemed to lose their fragrance. Vasudeva’s hands tightened on his sword hilt. And Kamsa? Kamsa’s face transformed from benevolent cousin to something that would haunt nightmares.
The Bhagavata Purana describes this moment: “Kālasya gatiḥ durjñeyā” – “The ways of time are mysterious and unknowable.”

The Prophecy That Launched a Thousand Horrors
You know, there’s something chilling about the way fear can transform a person. One moment Kamsa was the doting cousin, and the next, his hand was reaching for his sword to strike down Devaki right there in the wedding chariot.
But Vasudeva – brave, dharmic Vasudeva – threw himself between them.
“Kamsa, what madness is this?” he pleaded. “She is innocent! She has done nothing wrong!”
“Nothing wrong?” Kamsa’s voice had turned into a snarl. “She will give birth to my destroyer! How is that nothing?”

Here’s where Vasudeva showed the kind of quick thinking that legends are made of. Instead of fighting (which would have been suicide), he made a bargain that would haunt him for years to come.
“Listen to me, cousin,” Vasudeva said, his voice steady despite the chaos. “If it is the eighth child you fear, then why harm Devaki now? I promise you – I give you my solemn word – that I will hand over every child born to us. You can do with them as you will. But spare her life.”
The crowd watched in horrified silence as Kamsa considered this proposal. Finally, he lowered his sword, but his eyes remained cold as winter.
“Very well,” he agreed. “But remember, Vasudeva – every child. Without exception.”
And so began the most heartbreaking chapter in the lives of two of the most righteous souls ever born.
