Vasudev and Devaki

Why Do We Still Celebrate Janmashtami?

The Deeper Truth: Why This Birth Matters

Haven’t read about the miraculous escape of baby Krishna yet? You can read the last chapter here. To understand the full divine plan of Krishna, start your reading from the beginning.

Now, let me share with you something that makes this story even more profound. According to the Bhagavata Purana, Krishna was born without a sexual union, but by divine “mental transmission” from the mind of Vasudeva into the womb of Devaki.

Krishna’s birth represents the manifestation of the divine consciousness in the material world. In the story of Krishna, the deity is the agent of conception and also the offspring.

Think about it: in every other avatar, Vishnu descends into an existing body or takes a specific form for a particular purpose. But with Krishna, something different happened. The Bhagavata Purana tells us that Krishna is not an avatar in the traditional sense – He is the original form of the divine, Svayam Bhagavan, who chose to experience human life in its entirety.

This is why His birth had to be so miraculous. This is why the entire cosmos participated in the event.

New Life, New Love 💕

In Gokula, Yashoda woke up to find the most beautiful baby she’d ever seen lying next to her. Her heart instantly overflowed with such intense love that she completely forgot about the daughter she thought she’d delivered.

Nanda felt the same overwhelming joy. In fact, everyone in Gokula felt happier that day without knowing why. It was as if their hearts had suddenly become lighter and their lives more meaningful.

The Celebration Began 🎉

News of Nanda’s “son” spread through Gokula like wildfire. The entire village prepared for the biggest celebration they’d ever had:

  • Drums echoed through the streets
  • Women sang beautiful folk songs
  • Men danced with pure joy
  • Children laughed and played everywhere
  • Sweet rice was shared with everyone

The Eternal Message

As we reach the end of this incredible story, let me ask you something: what do you think this birth really represents?

On one level, it’s a beautiful tale of good triumphing over evil, of divine intervention protecting the innocent, and of love conquering fear. But dig deeper, and you’ll find layers of meaning that speak to the very core of human existence.

Krishna’s birth teaches us that the divine is always present, even in the darkest moments. When Devaki and Vasudeva were trapped in that prison, when evil seemed to have won completely, when hope was just a distant memory – that’s exactly when the divine chose to manifest.

It teaches us that love is stronger than fear. Kamsa, with all his power and cruelty, could not prevent the birth of the one who would eventually free the world from his tyranny. Love always finds a way.

It teaches us that the divine often comes in the most unexpected forms. Who would have thought that the Supreme Being would choose to be born in a prison, to parents who were suffering, in a time when evil seemed to rule the world?

And perhaps most importantly, it teaches us that we are never alone in our struggles. Just as Vasudeva found that prison doors opened, shackles fell away, and rivers parted when he was carrying out dharma, we too find that when we align ourselves with righteousness, the entire universe conspires to help us.

Still Celebrating Today 🌟

Every year, millions of people around the world celebrate Janmashtami, acting out these exact events with the same joy that filled Gokula 5,000 years ago. From big temples in Mathura to small homes in villages, from busy Indian cities to families living abroad, Krishna’s birth still inspires and guides people.

So the next time you find yourself in your own prison – whether it’s made of circumstances, relationships, fears, or failures – remember the story of Krishna’s birth. Remember that the divine often comes at midnight, when things seem darkest. Remember that love always finds a way. And remember that you are never, ever alone in your journey toward the light.

The child born in that Mathura prison grew up to tell Arjuna – and through him, all of us – “Surrender unto Me and I shall protect you from all sinful reactions. Do not fear.”
